How to Read an IRS Account Transcript When a CREDIT Is Present
PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON This lesson teaches students how to correctly read an IRS Form 1040 Account Transcript and identify when the IRS is acknowledging a credit.
STEP 1: READ THE IRS LEGEND “Any minus sign shown below signifies a credit amount.” This governs the entire ledger.
STEP 2: WHERE MINUS SIGNS APPEAR Modern transcripts do not always show minus signs on summary balances. Credits are identified contextually.
STEP 3: ACCOUNT BALANCE VS BALANCE DUE Account balance tracks net position. Balance due indicates money owed.
STEP 4: REFUND FREEZE TC 810 A refund freeze pauses release but does not remove a credit.
STEP 5: CONFIRMING CREDIT EXISTS Absence of TC 846, 841, 826, or 290/300 confirms the credit remains.
STEP 6: ANALYST VIEW “The account reflects a net credit currently under administrative hold.”
STEP 7: CORRECT PROCEDURE Do not amend or demand payment. Send an administrative reconciliation letter.
FINAL TAKEAWAY Credits are determined by ledger posture and codes, not symbols alone.
